TONANTINS, AMAZONAS, BRAZIL – AUGUST 2, 2025 36-year-old José Andrei de Matos Rodrigues murdered his partner, 44-year-old Valdilene da Silva Prestes. Then he attacked her 21-year-old daughter with a knife and caused her serious injuries. It took the police only a few hours to find him hiding in a nearby forest, arrest him, and transport him to the local police station.
But when local residents learned about the incident, the death of their neighbor affected them so much that they decided to take justice into their own hands. A crowd stormed the police station, beat José, and set him on fire. He died from his injuries.
Brazilian police issued a statement that such behavior from citizens is unacceptable. They also dispatched a special investigative unit to the town to determine who was responsible for the lynching and bring them to justice.
