BRASÍLIA, BRAZIL – NOVEMBER 13, 2024 Francisco Wanderley Luiz, 59, arrived at Praça dos Três Poderes and began detonating explosive devices in front of Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court building. He threw several of them toward the building, then placed one of the explosive devices against his head, lay down on the ground, and detonated it. The explosion killed him at the scene.
Shortly beforehand, his car, parked approximately 1,000 feet (300 meters) from the court, also exploded. Following the explosions, the area was closed off and bomb disposal experts gradually neutralized additional explosive devices that were found, including several pieces located near his body.
Luiz was a former candidate for city council with the PL party and unsuccessfully ran for office in the city of Rio do Sul in 2020. Before the attack, he had posted politically charged and threatening messages online. During the incident, Luiz was the only person killed; no other victims died.
