LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, USA – AUGUST 20, 1989 21-year-old Lyle Menendez and his 18-year-old brother Erik Menendez murdered their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, at their luxurious mansion in Beverly Hills. The couple was watching television when their sons entered the room armed with 12-gauge shotguns and opened fire. Jose suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head, while Kitty was shot several times as she attempted to escape.

After the murders, the brothers collected the spent shell casings, disposed of the guns, and drove to a movie theater to establish an alibi. They later returned home and called emergency services, claiming they had just discovered their parents’ bodies.
The case became one of the most notorious criminal cases in the history of the United States. During the trial, the brothers claimed that their father had subjected them to long-term physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, and that they feared their parents were planning to murder them to prevent a scandal from being exposed. The prosecution, on the other hand, argued that their actual motive was to obtain a family inheritance worth approximately $14 million. Both brothers were eventually convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
