PAPUA, INDONESIA Footage shows victims of tribal conflicts that occur in the Indonesian part of Papua. While some have lost their lives, others have suffered serious injuries in the fighting, most of them caused by arrows.
In remote areas of Indonesian Papua, tribal conflicts often stem from disputes over land, natural resources, local political influence, or retaliation for previous violence. Some disputes between communities can escalate into armed clashes involving bows and arrows, spears, machetes, and firearms.
The situation is further complicated by long-running political and security conflicts between Indonesian authorities and parts of the Indigenous population, including armed separatist groups. Tribal violence, however, should not automatically be confused with the separatist conflict, as these are distinct types of disputes.
In some areas, clashes can result in dozens of casualties and the displacement of local residents. Authorities are working to curb the violence through security operations, negotiations, and local peace agreements.
