IMPERATRIZ, MARANHÃO, BRAZIL – OCTOBER 9, 2025 Twenty-year-old Mailane Rego da Silva became the victim of a brutal murder while leaving her home in the morning to accompany her children to school. According to investigators, she was attacked on the street in front of her house by her neighbor, 56-year-old Widegilson Martins de Sousa, who repeatedly struck her with a sickle. The attack was captured by security cameras.

According to witnesses and police information, the attacker ambushed the woman from behind. Despite her severe injuries, Mailane attempted to flee and seek help, but after several dozen meters she collapsed on the sidewalk in front of a neighbor’s house, where she died. Her three young children, who were on their way to school, witnessed the entire attack.
After the crime, Widegilson Martins de Sousa fled the scene on foot. Police immediately launched a search and apprehended him later that same day in the Bacuri neighborhood. He was subsequently arrested and handed over to investigators.
The investigation revealed that the suspect had a history of violent behavior toward members of his own family. Police stated that there were records of attacks against his mother and sisters and that protective orders had been issued against him. Some neighbors also claimed that the man suffered from mental health problems.
