CUITZEO, MEXICO – NOVEMBER 15, 2012 The former mayor of Tiquicheo de Nicolás, María Santos Gorrostieta Salazar, was found dead near the municipality of Cuitzeo. An autopsy determined that she had been beaten to death.

She had been the victim of similar murder attempts in the past because of her anti-Narco policies. In 2009, someone opened fire on her and her husband. Her husband José Sánchez Chávez died, but she was lucky and survived with serious injuries.

On 22 January 2010, someone assassinated the truck in which she was travelling with other politicians. Again, she managed to survive. However, in 2012, she was not so lucky.
