MYANMAR (BURMA) Myanmar farmer was detained by a group of people. They tied his hands behind his back, brutally beat him, and eventually killed him by beheading him. A shallow grave had already been prepared for his body. The exact motive and the identities of the attackers are currently unknown.
The incident falls within the broader context of the ongoing civil war in Myanmar. In 2021, the military overthrew the democratically elected government and began violently suppressing protests and demonstrations. An armed resistance group, the People’s Defense Force (PDF), was formed and has been fighting alongside some armed ethnic groups against the current military government.
In connection with the civil war, cases of extrajudicial executions are reported in Myanmar almost daily. Both the military and the PDF respond harshly to any suspicion of cooperation with the enemy. Such accusations do not necessarily have to be supported by evidence; a mere accusation by a neighbor may be enough.
