GUADALAJARA, JALISCO, MEXICO – JUNE 23, 2019 María Fernanda Peña Álvarez Ojena and Alejandro Castro Martínez were young newlyweds. Only a day had passed since their wedding when they died together in a traffic accident.
They were driving in their Chevrolet car at the intersection of Avenida Tepeyac and Playa de Hornos, in the area of Residencial Moctezuma. Their vehicle was hit at high speed by a Ford Mustang driven by the famous footballer Joao Maleck. Both newlyweds were dead on the spot.
Joao Maleck was arrested by police immediately after the accident and was charged with aggravated negligent homicide. It was revealed that he was speeding and under the influence of alcohol. Although everything was proven in court, the judge only gave him a light sentence of 3 years, 8 months and 15 days.
Martha Álvarez Ugena, María’s mother, was shocked by the sentence and accused the judge of favoring Joao Maleck. She took advantage of the fact that her daughter had Spanish citizenship and appealed to the Spanish government to intervene in the case and provide support in seeking justice for her daughter’s death. Although many years have passed since the accident, Martha has never been able to achieve her goal.
