NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA – FEBRUARY 23, 1997 Sixty-nine-year-old Palestinian teacher Ali Hassan Abu Kamal opened fire on the observation deck on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building in New York City. He shot and killed 27-year-old Danish musician Christoffer Burmeister and wounded six other people. He then shot himself in the head and later died in the hospital.
Among those seriously injured was the musician’s bandmate, Matthew Gross, who suffered a head injury and brain damage. The motive for the attack remained disputed. Investigators found notes on the perpetrator criticizing American support for Israel, while his family initially claimed that he had acted out of desperation after losing his savings. Ten years later, his daughter stated that the attack had been politically motivated.
