PAPUA, INDONESIA Videos have surfaced online documenting the shocking behavior of separatists from the Free Papua Movement. They captured all civilians from a local village and subjected them to brutal beatings. They also targeted a school, shooting at it and then setting it on fire.
Because of similar incidents, the government of Indonesia classifies the Free Papua Movement as a terrorist organization and has been in an open armed conflict with it for several decades. The movement was founded in 1969 after Papua was annexed to Indonesia following a referendum. Most Papuans believe the referendum was intentionally manipulated, which created strong separatist resistance.
