CENTRAL PAPUA, INDONESIA There was an armed attack on a group of off-duty police officers. A group of separatists from the West Papua National Liberation Army (the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement, known as OPM) ambushed them while they were traveling, opening fire from the surrounding forest. The officers defended themselves and called for reinforcements, who arrived to stabilize the situation and evacuate the injured.
This incident is part of the long-running conflict in Papua, where some groups seek independence for the province from Indonesia. The OPM is an armed movement aiming to achieve political autonomy and independence for West Papua, and its members frequently attack Indonesian security forces as well as civilian targets. The conflict has persisted for decades, often in remote mountainous areas, and is marked by clashes, ambushes, and tensions between local communities and state forces.
