Indonesian authorities accused members of the armed separatist group TPNPB, which has long sought the independence of West Papua, of the murder. The organization’s spokesperson, Sebby Sambom, stated that Michelle Kurisi Ndoga was killed because she was suspected of cooperating with the Indonesian security forces and gathering intelligence. The police and military rejected these claims, stating that she was a civilian activist providing humanitarian assistance.
In October 2023, police announced the arrest of three suspects identified by the initials PM, AW, and RK, who were allegedly involved in the murder. According to investigators, the killing was premeditated, and the perpetrators recorded it on video, which they later shared on social media.
