CRIMEA, UKRAINE Photos show female patient with a parasitic disease called dirofilariasis, caused by worms of the genus Dirofilaria. The disease is transmitted by insect bites and most commonly affects dogs and cats, but it can sometimes be transmitted to humans.
The disease is most often caused by two species: Dirofilaria immitis, which settles in the heart, and Dirofilaria repens, which causes subcutaneous and ocular forms. Treatment in humans involves surgical removal of the worm.
