NEW YORK CITY, USA – AUGUST 20, 2026 Serious traffic accident occurred in the Inwood neighborhood of northern Manhattan, injuring three people. Shortly after 6:30 a.m., a Chevrolet Corvette was traveling at high speed along Sherman Avenue when it collided with a Mercedes-Benz at the intersection with West 204th Street.
The impact sent the Mercedes into parked vehicles and a moped, while the Corvette continued onto the sidewalk, where it struck a 34-year-old pedestrian before crashing into a building. Security camera footage captured the pedestrian being thrown into the air after the impact.
The injured pedestrian, as well as the driver and passenger of the Corvette, were taken to a hospital and were in stable condition, according to police. The Mercedes driver fled the scene and police are searching for him.
Police arrested the 27-year-old Corvette driver, Eric Torres, and charged him with reckless driving, endangering public safety, and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. Investigators are also looking into whether street racing was taking place before the crash. Local residents said speeding and dangerous maneuvers are a frequent problem on this part of Sherman Avenue.
