TUZLA, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA – MAY 25, 1995 City of Tuzla became the site of one of the most tragic attacks against civilians during the Bosnian War. The event known as the Tuzla massacre or the Kapija massacre claimed the lives of dozens of people, mostly young residents of the city.
At the time of the attack, the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina was taking place after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Tuzla was among the cities controlled by the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was repeatedly shelled during the conflict. Although it was an important industrial center, people of different ethnic backgrounds lived there, and the city was known for its relatively multiethnic structure.
On the evening of May 25, 1995, a large number of people were gathered at Kapija Square in the center of Tuzla. At the time, the popular location was especially frequented by young residents who spent their evenings there in cafés and on the streets. Shortly before 9 p.m., an artillery shell struck the square area and exploded among civilians.
The consequences were catastrophic. The explosion killed 71 people and injured more than one hundred others. Most of the victims were young people, with the average age being around their early twenties. The attack therefore also became known as the “crime against Tuzla’s youth.”
According to rulings by Bosnian courts, the shell was fired from territory controlled by the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) from the Ozren mountain area. Novak Đukić, who was the commander of the Ozren Tactical Group at the time of the massacre, was later convicted for the attack. The court found him responsible for ordering the artillery strike on Tuzla.
The case became one of the symbols of civilian suffering during the Bosnian War. Memorial events are held in Tuzla every year to honor the victims, and a monument at the site of the tragedy commemorates those who lost their lives in the attack.
The Kapija massacre remains one of the most sensitive events in the modern history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. For the people of Tuzla, it serves as a reminder that during wars, ordinary civilians who are not directly involved in fighting are often the most vulnerable victims.
