Wells entered the bank carrying a homemade weapon disguised as a walking cane and demanded money. He left with $8,702 before police stopped him nearby. Wells told officers that he had been forced to commit the robbery and warned them about the explosive device, but it detonated before bomb technicians could arrive.

- Kenneth Barnes
The FBI investigation uncovered a complex conspiracy involving Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, 58, and Kenneth Barnes, 53, who were indicted in 2007. Prosecutors alleged that the plot was designed to make Wells appear to be a hostage while ensuring that the bomb could prevent him from exposing the other participants. Diehl-Armstrong was later convicted, while Barnes pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme.
