AKTAU, KAZAKHSTAN – DECEMBER 25, 2024 Embraer E190AR aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, flight J2-8243, en route from Baku to Grozny, crashed near the city of Aktau during an emergency landing.
There were 67 people on board: 62 passengers and 5 crew members. According to available information, 32 people survived and were hospitalized, while 13 individuals, including both pilots, lost their lives in the crash.
The emergency landing may have been caused by a bird strike that led to technical problems. The aircraft issued a distress signal while flying over the Caspian Sea and was redirected to Aktau Airport. However, during the landing, the plane broke apart and caught fire.
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev expressed condolences to the families of the victims and declared December 26 a national day of mourning. Russian President Vladimir Putin also extended his sympathies and offered assistance in the investigation.
An investigation into the accident has been launched, involving authorities from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Embraer, the aircraft manufacturer, stated that it is cooperating with relevant authorities to determine the causes of the crash.
