Process of embalming a deceased

The video comes from the mortuary of a funeral home and shows the first part of the embalming process of a deceased woman. An aspirator is introduced into the body – a metal rod connected to a device that creates a vacuum (something like a vacuum cleaner or pump). This device sucks out bodily fluids that could speed up decomposition.

The next step to successful embalming is to inject embalming fluid into the body. Formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, or methanol is used. These fluids are highly antibacterial, convert tissues and delay decomposition. In addition, they help to improve the colour of the skin.

In some cases, other steps such as chemical replacement of body fluids follow. This step is resorted to if the body is already in the decomposition stage or if the burial is scheduled for a longer period of time.

Embalming is a technique known and perfected since the time of ancient Egypt. Nowadays, it is used to make the deceased as realistic as possible at the funeral. This includes not only the appearance, but also the smell, which could annoy and disgust any funeral goers. In addition, embalming also has a hygienic reason, as it prevents the spread of bacteria and pathogens.
