LASHIO, SHAN STATE, MYANMAR (BURMA) – APRIL 10, 2025 Armed group Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) carried out the public execution of five men convicted of serious violent crimes in Lashio, Myanmar.
Local authorities held a public judicial assembly. One man was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his own daughter, while another was sentenced to death for intentional murder. Four members of a six-man armed gang were sentenced to death for robberies and murders, while the remaining two received suspended death sentences. Five of the convicted men were subsequently taken to the execution site and executed.
The MNDAA is an ethnic armed group that controls parts of northern Myanmar, including the city of Lashio. The country has been engulfed in civil war since the 2021 military coup, and numerous areas have fallen outside the control of the central government. The MNDAA has established its own administrative and judicial system in the territories under its control, which includes death sentences. However, such executions raise serious questions about compliance with the right to a fair trial.
