ZIMBABWE Two thieves were caught in the act of trying to steal a car. A crowd immediately gathered around them and gave them a lesson in street justice. Both were doused with motor oil and painfully whipped.
In Zimbabwe, as in other parts of Africa, mob justice is quite common. However, it is not considered normal, and governments actively try to combat it. Such actions violate the human rights of the thief – he still has the right to a fair trial and legal punishment. Anyone who takes justice into their own hands often faces harsher legal consequences than the thief himself.
