BAVET, CAMBODIA – AUGUST, 2017 Sovann Sokmalin, 18, worked as a casino attendant in Bavet, a town on the border with Vietnam. On the fateful day, August 2, 2017, she was at church and just about to leave for work. She decided to use the services of a taxi and got into a car with two men, 36-year-old Chhoeuy Socheat and 32-year-old Phleak Mony. Her family has since lost contact with her.

Her dead body was found on August 4, 2017 by a buffalo herder in the early stages of decomposition dumped in a puddle in a field. It was proven that she had been raped. The two taxi drivers were caught, but despite the lack of evidence against them and thanks to their good lawyers, they were still able to avoid conviction for one year after the crime. But in the end they were sentenced to life imprisonment.
