ALAGOAS, BRAZIL Man was lynched to death by an enraged mob. During the lynching, the mob beat him, dragged him across the ground, and stabbed him. After he was dead, they cut off his head and impaled it on a wooden stake. The mob’s reaction was prompted by allegations that he had committed rape. Some sources even claim that the victim was a minor.
Although such acts of vigilante justice may seem effective and fair, the opposite is true. In any civilized society, even a violent offender has the right to a fair trial and punishment in accordance with the law. Never take part in such lynchings – you could face legal consequences that are often more severe than those faced by the offender. As a civil citizen, you have the legal right to detain a suspect until the police arrive.
