ĐÀ NẴNG, VIETNAM Doctors from the city of Đà Nẵng removed more than 100 larvae from a patient’s mouth. The case serves as a reminder that even today, some exotic and neglected conditions can lead to serious health problems.
The patient had been bedridden for a long time after a stroke and did not receive proper care, which allowed flies to lay larvae in his mouth. The family did not notice the situation in time. This phenomenon is called oral myiasis and is caused by fly larvae that can infest the tissues of people with limited mobility and poor hygiene.
Similar cases are rare, but have also been reported in other parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Doctors usually remove the larvae mechanically and prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
