MALI Russian Africa Corps unit released footage of the aftermath of a successful counterterrorism operation. They managed to kill dozens of JNIM terrorists and secure their weapons, including mortars, grenades, and RPGs.
Russian forces in Mali operate primarily as military support for the government and army of Mali in the fight against Islamist insurgents and separatist groups. However, this is not a conventional Russian army deployed as part of an international mission – the main role is played by the Russian Africa Corps, a structure linked to the Russian Ministry of Defense that took over much of the role previously held by the Wagner Group.
In addition to military cooperation, there is also political and economic influence involved. Russia is attempting to strengthen its position in Africa at a time when Western countries are losing influence in the region. Moscow gains access to political allies and is also seeking economic projects, for example in the field of mineral extraction.
The presence of Russian forces in Mali is highly controversial. Human rights organizations accuse the Africa Corps and the Malian army of attacks on civilians and human rights violations during operations against insurgents. Russia rejects these allegations and claims that its forces are helping Mali restore security and fight terrorism.
