RUSSIA Video shows a surgical procedure in which surgeons amputate a man’s left leg above the knee. The man was a soldier in the Russian army and sustained severe injuries during combat in Ukraine.
Amputation is a complex surgical procedure that involves much more than simply cutting off a limb. Selecting the right amputation site is just the first step. Properly shortening and securing the muscles (myoplasty or myodesis) is crucial for ensuring stump stability and minimizing phantom pain. Surgeons must also preserve enough of the femur to adequately cover the remaining tissue and shape the stump. Additionally, ligating the arteries is essential to prevent hematomas, while the removal of any damaged tissue and careful post-operative bandaging help reduce swelling and minimize the risk of infection.
