CURASICA, LA PLAYA DE BELÉN, NORTH SANTANDER, COLOMBIA – JANUARY 28, 2026 Tragic aviation accident occurred in northeastern Colombia, when a small commercial Beechcraft 1900D aircraft operated for the state airline SATENA crashed, killing all 15 people on board. The flight, identified as Flight 8849, was traveling from Cucuta to Ocana in the Norte de Santander department when it lost contact with air traffic control and disappeared from radar about 12 minutes after takeoff.
The aircraft, registered as HK-4709, departed from Camilo Daza Airport in Cucuta at approximately 11:42 a.m. local time and was scheduled to land at Aguas Claras Airport in Ocana around 12:05 p.m. The last communication with the pilot occurred just as the plane was preparing for its final descent, after which it vanished from radar.
The subsequent search and rescue operation lasted several hours. The wreckage was eventually found in a remote mountainous area between the towns of La Playa de Belen and Hacari, and it was confirmed that none of the 13 passengers and two crew members survived.
Among the victims were notable figures, including Congressman Diogenes Quintero Amaya, who represented the Catatumbo region, and Carlos Salceda, a candidate for the Colombian parliament. Other passengers included various civilians and professionals.
