The Azov Brigade was established as a volunteer battalion in 2014 when Russia began invading and occupying Ukraine. But it was gradually incorporated into Ukraine’s official armed forces. In 2022, the unit played a key role in defending the city of Mariupol.
The brigade is often the target of Russian propaganda claiming that Azov is a Nazi unit, proving the presence of Nazis throughout Ukraine. The fact is that several Nazis were indeed uncovered in the unit, especially at the beginning of its existence. Since then, the unit has undergone significant changes and these are isolated cases at present.
