METRO CITY, LAMPUNG, INDONESIA – MARCH 13, 2025 16-year-old Illiyin A’Nur Rista, a 12th-grade student at a secondary medical school, studying to become a medical laboratory technician, was found dead in her student accommodation. She was discovered by her boyfriend, 20-year-old Rifandi. She had allegedly sent him a message on WhatsApp in which she expressed her intention to commit suicide. The content of the message was: “Come quickly and don’t regret my body. We’ll meet again in heaven. Forgive me, dear.”

He ran to the hostel where she was staying approximately 30 minutes after reading the message. When he broke down the door to her room, he found her hanging from the bathroom door frame. According to him, she was still slightly trembling and breathing hoarsely at the time. Her tongue was sticking out and her eyes were open. Her pants were soaked with urine. He called for help from the neighbors, and with their assistance, they took her down. At that point, they realized she was already dead.
Her body was transported to Ahmad Yani Metro, where a forensic autopsy was conducted. The autopsy result confirmed suicide and ruled out any foul play.
The motive for her desperate act was a period that was delayed by three weeks. She was afraid she might be pregnant, although she was not yet married. In Muslim countries like Indonesia, this is a major social disgrace. In the days leading up to her death, she had frequent arguments with her boyfriend on this topic.
