The Volhynia Massacre

VOLHYNIA, UKRAINE The Volhynia Massacre was a series of brutal ethnic cleansing campaigns that took place during World War II between 1943 and 1945 in the Volhynia region (now in western Ukraine). Ukrainian nationalists from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) sought to create an independent Ukrainian state and launched systematic attacks on the Polish civilian population to establish an ethnically homogeneous territory.

The bloodiest part of the massacres occurred in 1943, when Polish villages were attacked, often in extremely brutal ways—civilians, including women and children, were murdered. The total number of Polish victims is estimated to be between 40,000 and 60,000.

Poles retaliated with defensive and counter-attacks against the Ukrainian population, resulting in several thousand more Ukrainian deaths. These events left a deep rift between the two nations and remain a painful subject in Polish-Ukrainian relations to this day.

These authentic and uncensored photos are a harrowing testimony to this dark period in human history.
