BANGKA, BANGKA-BELITUNG, INDONESIA When three middle school students were returning home late at night on a motorcycle, they were involved in a fatal accident. The motorcycle driver lost control at high speed, went off the road, and crashed head-on into an electrical pole.
The driver suffered a fractured skull and lost one eye. Another passenger also suffered head injuries incompatible with life. The third survived but suffered severe fractures to both legs.
Although the minimum age to obtain a driver’s license in Indonesia is 17, it is not unusual to see younger individuals riding motorcycles or scooters. This is one of the most commonly ignored laws, often not enforced even by traffic police. The main reason is poor transportation access in many remote areas. As a result, a motorcycle becomes the only way a child can get to school.
