YASSIADA ISLAND, TURKEY, 1961 On May 27, 1960, Military coup took place in Turkey, during which a group of Turkish army officers overthrew the democratically elected government of the Democrat Party led by Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. The army took control of the state, dissolved parliament, suspended parts of the political system, and arrested the country’s top government officials, claiming that Turkey was heading toward authoritarianism, political tensions were rising, and violent clashes among the population were becoming a serious threat.
Political trials followed, with leading members of the government being tried on Yassıada Island. These trials resulted in harsh verdicts, and in 1961 three prominent politicians – Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, Foreign Minister Fatin Rüştü Zorlu, and Finance Minister Hasan Polatkan – were sentenced to death and executed. The event became one of the most significant turning points in modern Turkish history.
