AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT, INDIA – JUNE 12, 2025 Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner operating as Air India flight AI‑171 crashed just minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad, bound for London, killing 242 people on board. The aircraft slammed into a residential hostel for doctors in the Meghani Nagar area. The impact and explosion also killed at least five more people on the ground and left at least 60 injured and hospitalized. The death toll could increase.
Three crew members
Just after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and climbing to only about 625 feet (192 meters), the pilots declared an emergency, sending a mayday distress signal. Preliminary investigations point toward a technical malfunction – most likely in the engine or electrical system. Authorities have ruled out pilot error or weather conditions.
Miraculously, one person survived the crash. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British citizen of Indian origin, reportedly jumped out of an emergency exit window and escaped with minor injuries.
The crash and the subsequent explosion occurred in a densely populated neighborhood and created a massive fireball, fueled by the fully loaded aircraft. The fiery blast caught the attention of thousands, and many residents captured videos of the event – one even managed to film the moment the plane came down.
