DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Video captures one of the many atrocities committed daily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). A man holds up the severed head of another man, proudly displaying it before a frenzied crowd as a grim war trophy.
The conflict in the DRC is one of Africa’s most severe ongoing armed crises. Fighting is concentrated mainly in the country’s eastern regions, where government forces face numerous armed groups, including the M23 rebel movement, which has seized vast areas and major cities. The conflict is rooted in decades of ethnic and political tensions, competition over mineral resources, and interference by neighboring countries. Rwanda, in particular, has been accused of supporting M23. The violence has been marked by civilian massacres, kidnappings, sexual violence, and the forced displacement of millions of people. Despite diplomatic efforts to end the fighting, the situation remains unstable, leaving civilians exposed to continued violence and grave danger.
