RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – JUNE 7, 2025 Car exploded while being refueled with compressed natural gas (CNG) at Praça da Cruz Vermelha in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The driver, 64-year-old Guaraci Pereira R. Costa, suffered severe injuries and died after being taken to Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar. A 61-year-old gas station attendant, Paulo B. dos Santos, was also seriously injured.
The explosion completely destroyed the car and part of the gas station, and debris damaged nearby buildings, including the National Cancer Institute (INCA). The blast was heard across the neighborhood, causing panic among residents.
Firefighters, police, and traffic engineers responded to the scene, streets were closed, and experts conducted an investigation. The cause of the gas cylinder rupture has not yet been determined, and the investigation continues. The incident highlights the risks associated with CNG refueling and the importance of regular safety inspections.
