TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK, SANTA MARTA, MAGDALENA, COLOMBIA – MARCH 7, 2023 20-year-old María Camila Navales Duque and her mother-in-law, 58-year-old Gloria Amparo Ortiz Montoya, went on a trip to Tayrona National Natural Park. Together with a group of 22 other tourists, they set out on a boat trip from a location known as El Rodadera. The boat, named “La Tartamuda,” traveled on an unauthorized route, which led to its accident and subsequent capsizing near Playa Cristal.
Rescue teams, working with local fishermen, managed to save 22 people. Unfortunately, María and her mother-in-law were not so lucky. Their bodies were recovered from the water lifeless.
Investigations revealed that the travel agency operated the boat “La Tartamuda” without the required licenses, and the route it took was unauthorized. Investigators concluded that this led to the accident. The boat captain and two assistants were detained by police, and their licenses were suspended.
