RAQQA, SYRIA – JUNE 15, 2026 Two Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked one of the security headquarters in the Syrian city of Raqqa. The attack took place in the western part of the city, where one of the heavily guarded security complexes is located.
According to Syrian authorities, the attackers attempted to infiltrate the facility in the morning hours and attacked members of the internal security forces. A firefight followed, during which small arms and explosives were used. One of the militants was killed during the clash, while the second detonated an explosive vest after being surrounded by security forces.
The attack caused casualties among the security units. According to an official statement, one member of the forces was killed and three others were injured. However, some unofficial sources reported a higher number of casualties.
The Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that its fighters had targeted the headquarters of Syrian security forces. The incident shows that despite losing its territorial control, ISIS cells in Syria remain capable of carrying out armed operations against government and security targets.
Raqqa was once a symbol of the Islamic State’s power, as the group turned it into the center of its self-declared caliphate during the height of its expansion. After its military defeat in 2017, the city came under the control of forces fighting against ISIS, but the area remains vulnerable to attacks by extremist cells.
