JUBAN, SORSOGON, PHILIPPINES – MARCH, 2015 On 8 March 2015, a woman’s corpse was found washed up on the banks of the Rangas River. She was identified as 27 year old Mery Dita Moneo Laureta. Just a day later, on 9 March, another female corpse was found a short distance from the site of the original discovery. She was identified as 16 year old Arlyn Quisino Borromeo. Investigations found that the two women knew each other and had come together from far away Manila to celebrate the festival.
According to Laureta’s parents, she was said to have a large amount of cash on her person, around PHP 20,000 (equivalent to US$340). In the Philippines, that’s a lot of money equivalent to one average monthly salary. However, no money was found on her corpse, so the police worked mainly with the idea that the motive for the murder was robbery.
Several witnesses said that the two women had joined a group of boys who were drunk and celebrating the festival. They said that as soon as they got off the bus, they started dancing with them and having fun. But they never made it home. This is the last lead of the investigation and the perpetrator was never caught.
Forensic autopsies on both women determined the same cause of death – asphyxiation and drowning. Their vaginas showed no signs of forced entry or semen.
