Two people killed by fallen live cables in Venezuela

BARUTA, MIRANDA, VENEZUELA – AUGUST 25, 2025 Tragic event occurred on Bolívar Street in the city center. Near the Las Minas de Baruta bus stop, high-voltage electrical cables came loose, killing a 12-year-old boy and his 47-year-old grandmother.

Witnesses reported that they first heard a loud crack, like a strong snap or an explosion. Before they realized what had happened, they saw the victims’ bodies lying on the sidewalk next to the sparking wires. Due to the danger to their own lives, there was no choice but to call emergency services and wait. The rescuers who arrived on the scene could only confirm the deaths.

Venezuelan media reported that the victims were a 12-year-old boy and his 47-year-old grandmother. They were reportedly just passing by, in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The case is being investigated by the National Directorate for Homicides and Serious Crimes (CICPC), aiming to clarify the causes of the accident and, if necessary, identify those responsible. Technicians from the energy company Corpoelec are cooperating with investigators.

Preliminary results, based on witness accounts of the loud crack, suggest the cables may have come loose due to mechanical damage, which could be caused by corrosion or neglected maintenance. Investigators will need much more time for a final conclusion.

Unfortunately, similar situations are not uncommon in Venezuela, as the country has long struggled with failing electrical infrastructure, largely due to its economic problems.

If you ever witness falling electrical cables, always prioritize your own safety first. Electricity can spread through the ground, so stay at least 30 feet (10 meters) away. Do not try to touch the victims, as the current can pass through them. The best action is to immediately call emergency services, remain calm, and explain the situation as clearly as possible. Stay alert and warn others nearby, using shouting or gestures to prevent them from approaching the danger zone.
