LA GUAJIRA, COLOMBIA – DECEMBER 11, 2025 Everything began with the disappearance of 3-year-old Shelsy Michel Navarro Ojeda. On December 10, she went missing from her home in the village of Mingueo in the municipality of Dibulla. Her parents immediately reported her as missing and, together with neighbors, launched an extensive search that lasted until the following day and ended tragically. The girl was found murdered not far from her home.
Near her body, investigators found unspecified items that could have belonged to the perpetrator. An amateur investigation led the community to a local resident, a 15-year-old adolescent. The enraged crowd of community members showed him no mercy. They lynched him and executed him by beheading.
The alleged perpetrator’s body was later found naked, with the severed head placed on a tree and a message carved into his chest. The case caused widespread shock due to both the child’s death and the community’s response to the suspected killer, while the investigation continues in an effort to clarify the murder and ensure the protection of children’s rights in the region.
Incidents like this remind us why it is so important to rely solely on the state justice system and never take the law into our own hands. Innocent people can easily be killed. But even a guilty perpetrator has the right to a fair trial and a lawful punishment.
