Uvalde school shooting aftermath

UVALDE, TEXAS, USA – MAY 24, 2022 The shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, took place on May 24, 2022. The attacker, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, began his assault by shooting his grandmother in the face. He then stole her car and drove to the elementary school, which he had attended as a child. On his way to the school, he was involved in a car accident near the campus and exited the vehicle.

Ramos was armed with a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle and carried a significant amount of ammunition. He entered the school building through a rear door that was not properly locked. Shortly after entering, he began shooting at school staff and children. Ramos made his way to a classroom where he barricaded himself and started shooting at the children and teachers inside.

During the approximately 77 minutes that Ramos remained in the classroom, local and state police units, including special response teams, arrived at the scene. Although the police were on-site relatively quickly, they were unable to immediately breach the classroom where Ramos was barricaded and neutralize him. Instead, they waited for additional equipment, such as shields and keys to the locked doors. In total, Ramos killed 21 people, including 19 children aged 9 to 11, and two teachers. Dozens more were injured, some seriously.

During the attack, repeated attempts were made to contact the attacker through mobile phones used by the children to call for help. The children inside the classroom called 911 several times, but the police entered the room only long after it was clear that the situation was extremely dire.

After entering the classroom, Ramos was eventually shot and killed by a member of a special unit after a dramatic gunfight. The shooting at Robb Elementary School is one of the deadliest school massacres in U.S. history and left deep scars on the Uvalde community and across the United States.
