VENEZUELA – JUNE, 2026 Northern Venezuela was hit on June 24 by a series of very strong earthquakes that caused one of the most serious natural disasters in the region in recent years. The tremors came in quick succession and their strength reached approximately 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. The epicenters were located near coastal areas, from where the shocks quickly spread to densely populated parts of the country, including the area around the capital Caracas.
The earthquakes caused extensive damage to buildings, infrastructure, and the transportation network. Many residential houses, especially older or poorly constructed ones, collapsed or suffered severe structural damage. People in the affected areas ran into the streets in panic, and immediate evacuations began. In some districts, there was a collapse of basic services, including electricity, water, and communication.
The consequences were tragic. According to current estimates, the disaster has claimed more than 1,400 confirmed victims and over 3,000 injured, while many others remain missing. Rescue teams from Venezuela and abroad are continuing their search for survivors under the rubble, often in difficult conditions due to unstable structures and frequent aftershocks, which further complicate the situation.
