FERNANDO DE NORONHA ISLAND, BRAZIL – JANUARY 9, 2026 Tayane Cachoeira Dalazen is a Brazilian lawyer and surfer who gained media attention after being bitten by a nurse shark (known in Portuguese as “tubarão-lixa”) while snorkeling near Fernando de Noronha Island.

According to her account, she jumped into the water during an organized tour when the shark approached her and bit her right thigh. She stated that it held on for about five seconds before it was driven away. The injury was not serious – she suffered a superficial wound, received several stitches, antibiotics, and a tetanus shot.
The incident was captured on video, which later went viral on social media. Several months later, a new, higher-quality recording from a different angle surfaced, showing the actual moment of the bite much more clearly.
Interestingly, Dalazen herself repeatedly emphasized that she does not consider it a classic shark attack. She claims it was an unfortunate accident and that this species of shark does not normally regard humans as prey. After recovering, she even returned to the ocean and resumed both surfing and diving.
