NEW YORK CITY, USA – DECEMBER 22, 2024 Tragic incident occurred in the New York City subway, which shook the entire city. A woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was brutally attacked and burned alive inside an F train car. The incident took place at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn, one of the busiest transportation hubs in New York.
According to witnesses and security cameras, the victim was asleep on the subway seat when a man approached her and set her clothing on fire with a lighter. The attack was quick and completely unexpected. The flames spread rapidly, and the woman died on the spot before emergency services arrived.
The police arrived at the scene within minutes and immediately began their investigation. The station was closed for several hours to allow forensic experts to conduct their examination.
Thanks to footage from the cameras and information from high school students who recognized the perpetrator, the suspect was arrested about eight hours after the incident. Police stated that there had been no prior interaction between the suspect and the victim and that they were likely not acquainted. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
The incident sparked outrage among New Yorkers. City leaders, including Mayor Eric Adams, expressed deep concern over the rising violence in the city’s public transportation system. “This is an unforgivable and horrific crime that demands immediate action,” the mayor said in his statement.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced plans to further strengthen security measures. In the past, hundreds of police officers and members of the National Guard had been deployed in the subway system. A large number of cameras have also been installed to monitor operations.
