Strong, foul smell coming from one of the apartments caught the attention of neighbors, who alerted the police. Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered the severely decomposed and bloated body of a woman. The cause of death remains unknown.
Bloating is a result of microbial decomposition. After death, anaerobic bacteria within the body start breaking down tissues, producing gases such as methane, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. These gases accumulate – especially in the abdominal cavity – because the body’s tissues are still initially firm and prevent the gases from escaping. This leads to visible swelling and bloating of the body.
