CENTENÁRIO, CARUARU, BRAZIL – DECEMBER 24, 2011 Aline Maiara Gomes da Silva, 19, sat on the porch of her home in the favela on Christmas Eve, enjoying a drink. According to witnesses, a burly man approached her at a fast pace with a gun in his hand. She tried to escape to her house, but the bullets were faster. She was shot several times in the back and fell dead to the ground in front of the Christmas tree.
The killer was apprehended by police the following day. He was a 17-year-old who had escaped from a juvenile detention facility. His motive was revenge. He learned that the victim’s aunt had murdered his grandfather more than 10 years ago.
