The incident occurred on January 6, 2025, around 1 a.m.

Edson, playing as a goalkeeper, was hit directly in the chest by a powerful shot. Video footage shows him collapsing to the ground and calling for help. His family immediately attempted to rush him to the hospital in Maués, but due to the region’s low river levels, the journey took over 11 hours. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, Edson had already passed away.

In the days leading up to the tragedy, Edson had reportedly complained about chest pain, which might have been caused by prior hits during previous football games. However, he had no known history of heart issues. His family awaits the official medical report, but it is believed that the fatal blow to his chest was the cause of death.

Medical experts have highlighted the possibility of “commotio cordis,” a rare but potentially fatal condition where a sudden impact to the chest can trigger lethal cardiac arrhythmia. Preventive measures such as protective gear and the availability of defibrillators during sports events are crucial to minimizing such risks.

Edson was laid to rest on January 7, 2025, in the community where he lived. His untimely death serves as a tragic reminder of the unpredictable dangers associated with sports and the importance of rapid medical intervention to prevent similar incidents in the future.
