KANDIENG REAY, CAMBODIA – JULY 27, 2024 Roeun Pisey, 17, had just finished her shift at the factory in Tuol Sala village and was waiting with about 20-30 workers for a car to take her home. Suddenly, a bus carrying other workers home from work sped up. The 36-year-old bus driver, a Pon Sony, failed to control the steering and crashed into the group. More than 10 workers were injured. But Roeun was most unlucky, because she was the only one who found herself under the wheels of the bus. She was crushed and died on the spot.
The production zone that the bus was passing through has very strict regulations and it is forbidden to drive fast there. Witnesses said the bus was going at least 3 times faster than the speed limit. The driver was taken away by police and will apparently be charged with manslaughter.
