ITAPETININGA, BRAZIL – MARCH 21, 2011 Samara Silva Santos Neves, 18, and her 4-year-old nephew went grocery shopping in downtown Itapetininga. She decided to take a shortcut through the dirt road and meadow on her way back home to the farm where she lived. It was in the meadow that they were ambushed by a man who began to rape Samara.

Her 4-year-old cousin ran screaming to his grandparents, whom he told what had happened to them. When he and his grandparents returned to the scene an hour later, they found Samara already dead. The attacker had killed her with several blows to the head with a blunt object.

The police got several tips about a drifter who was supposed to be in the meadow. But no one was ever caught. Samara left behind a 2-year-old son.
