2023 Jacksonville Shooting

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, USA – AUGUST 26, 2023 At a Dollar General store in the New Town neighborhood, a racially motivated shooting took place in which 21-year-old Ryan Palmeter killed three Black victims. According to the FBI, he began shooting at approximately 1:08 p.m. Armed with a handgun and a rifle, he attacked people inside and outside the store. A total of one employee and two customers were killed.

Among the victims was Angela Michelle Carr, a 52-year-old Uber driver whom Palmeter shot inside her vehicle in the parking lot. Another victim was 29-year-old Jerrald Gallion, who was shot while entering the store. The third victim was 19-year-old employee Anolt Joseph “A.J.” Laguerre Jr., whom the shooter shot while he was attempting to flee the store.

Shortly before the attack, Palmeter appeared on the grounds of nearby Edward Waters University, a historically Black university. Security officer Lt. Antonio Bailey noticed him after students reported a suspicious man. Palmeter was wearing tactical gear and subsequently left the campus. According to investigators, however, there was no evidence that the university was his intended target.

According to authorities, Palmeter carefully planned the attack. He had painted a Nazi swastika on one of his weapons and left behind racist writings before the shooting. The FBI later stated that it was a targeted attack and a racially motivated hate crime, and launched a federal investigation into the case.

After killing three people, Palmeter barricaded himself inside the store and subsequently died by suicide. According to the FBI, no one else was killed or injured during the attack.

The shooting also provoked a strong reaction in Jacksonville because of where it occurred. The Dollar General was located in a predominantly Black neighborhood and just a short distance from Edward Waters University. The incident also occurred exactly five years after the 2018 Jacksonville video game shooting, in which two people were also killed and the perpetrator subsequently died by suicide.
