BARREIROS, PERNAMBUCO, BRAZIL – DECEMBER 5, 2024 João Manoel dos Santos, 68, was drinking alcohol at his home with an acquaintance identified only as Antônio, 55. The two men had a drunken argument and the argument turned into an attack with a wooden stick on João. He beat him to death in the middle of a street in the city centre.

Because João was a good neighbour and people liked him, no one could understand why he was murdered. When Antônio was suspected, the neighbours came for him before the police. They lynched him almost to death. The arrival of the police probably saved his life.
